Biometric Systems
Biometric systems can seem complicated, but they all use the same three steps:
- Enrollment: The first time you use a biometric system, it records basic information about you, like your name or an identification number. It then captures an image or recording of your specific characteristic.
- Storage: Biometric systems analyze your trait and translate it into a code or graph. Some systems also record this data onto a smart card that you carry with you. Because of sensitive nature of this information, this coded information is almost always encrypted and stored.
- Comparison: The next time you use the system, it compares the trait you present to the information on file. Then, it either accepts or rejects that you are who you claim to be
Types of Biometric Systems
Facial Recoginition System: facial recognition system is a computer application for automatically identifying or verifying a person from a digital image . One of the ways to do this is by comparing selected facial features from the image with the image in database. It is typically used in security systems and can be compared to other biometrics such as fingerprint or eye iris recognition systems.
Fingerprint verification: Fingerprint verification is a technique used in applications such as attendance and access control systems. It is the process of automatically matching one's fingerprints against a database of pre-recorded fingerprints. These systems are used in elections, driver licensing, manufacturing businesses etc.
Hand geometry: This biometric identifies users by the shape of their hands. Hand geometry readers measure a user's hand along many dimensions and compare those measurements to measurements stored in a file. It remains popular; common applications include access control and time-and-attendance operations.
Iris Recognition: Iris recognition is a method of biometric authentication that uses pattern recognition techniques based on an individual's eyes. The only biometric authentication technology designed for use in a one-to many search environment.
Voice Recognition: Voice or Speaker recognition is the technology of recognizing people from their voices. Such systems extract features from speech, model them, and use them to recognize the person from his/her voice.
Keystroke dynamics: Also called typing dynamics, is the detailed timing information that describes exactly when each key was depressed and when it was released as a person is typing at a computer keyboard.
Retinal scan: This is a biometric technique that uses the unique patterns on a person's retina to identify them.
Multi-modal: It combine different biometric applications. By integrating two or more biometric methodologies, these types of solutions meet the highest and most stringent security requirements.
