Biometrics Basics

What is Biometrics

Biometrics is the process of using a person's unique physical characteristics for computer identification. Instead of using passwords, human characterictics like fingerprints and patterns in human eye are used for identification.

Biometric characteristics can be divided in two main classes:

  • Physiological: related to the shape of the body. The oldest traits, that have been used for more than 100 years, are fingerprints. Other examples are face recognition, hand geometry and iris recognition.
  • Behavioral: related to the behavior of a person. The first characteristic to be used, still widely used today, is the signature. More modern approaches are the study of keystroke dynamics and of voice.

Is Biometrics same as forensics?

Biometrics and forensics have a lot in common, but they're not exactly the same. Biometrics uses your physical or behavioral characteristics to determine your identity or to confirm that you are who you claim to be. Forensics uses the same kind of information to establish facts in civil or criminal investigations.

What are the privacy concerns?

Banks and others who offer biometric-based security to their customers report a pragmatic response. Anything that saves the information-overloaded consumer from having to remember another password or PIN comes as a welcome respite. A recent survey in US showed 83 percent of those surveyed approved of finger imaging.
