Biometrics Applications in India

  • Biometric ATMs for rural India: To reach the rural masses, banks are going all out in providing a user-friendly banking experience. To boost micro financing initiatives, banks are deploying biometric solutions with ATMs.
  • Thumb-Print Banking Takes India: A pilot program will put 15 biometric ATMs at village kiosks in five districts across southern India. The machines are expected to serve about 100,000 workers who will use fingerprint scanners, rather than ATM cards and PINs, to obtain their funds.
  • India to issue biometric passports next year: Government has decided to introduce biometric passports, using sophisticated technology of finger prints, in the country by the end of next year.Introduction of this system will involve massive computerisation and the task has been entrusted to the government-owned National Informatics Centre (NIC).
